Frazier History Museum

Frazier History Museum is a Smithsonian affiliated institution that is host to permanent exhibitions about the culture and history of Kentucky. It is the official starting point of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, making it a popular tourist destination in Louisville.

It is home to the Cool Kentucky Exhibition, featuring iconic cultural objects and stories that originate from the state. 3 winning dresses from the KMAC Couture wearable art competition are included in the exhibition.

Polycam, Autodesk Maya, Processing, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects

Problem

The dresses are located on a mezzanine, a largely inaccessible part of the museum. Some guided tours have had to skip over this part of the exhibition due to disabilities. The staff and I brainstormed of ways to show the dresses to all guests in a manner that was beyond just simple photo or video. As a solution, I suggested an interactive application containing 3D scans and brief information about the artists.

Model Creation

The museum has a limited budget and wanted to keep the cost of this project as low as possible. I recommended we used the free photogrammetry app Polycam to create 3D models of the dresses. After scanning, I cleaned up the polygons and textures in Autodesk Maya. One of the hats did not scan correctly due to the opacity of the materials and I had to recreate it within the program.
